Welcome to the Lake George Conservancy (LGC)
Lake George Conservancy invites you to explore one of the most beautiful lakes in Indiana. Lake George Indiana, nestled near the Michigan border, offers a peaceful retreat filled with nature, education, and community events. Although some may be familiar with Lake George Michigan, the Indiana side is home to protected land, scenic walking paths, and rich biodiversity.
In addition, our preserve is part of a growing network of conservation areas in Indiana focused on long-term sustainability. Whether you’re here for seasonal Lake George events or simply enjoying a stroll, there’s always something to discover. Be sure to visit the Lake George Conservancy Boutique, where every purchase supports local conservation.
For example, our annual LGC Chicken BBQ Fundraiser brings people together to support land protection efforts. Therefore, your visit not only connects you with nature but also helps preserve it for generations to come.
As a member-driven public benefit corporation and 501(c)(3), the Lake George Conservancy focuses on three key areas:
Land Acquisition: The LGC works to protect Lake George’s water quality and ecosystem from pollution and environmental degradation. This goal is achieved by acquiring ecologically significant parcels of land, either through purchase or donation, to establish a protective greenbelt.
Environmental Testing: Partnering with the Steuben County Lakes Council, the LGC conducts periodic environmental testing and scientific analysis of Lake George’s waters, tributaries, and surrounding ecosystems to monitor our water and ensure the safety of residents.
Communication: The LGC is committed to regularly sharing information with residents and state authorities in Indiana and Michigan. These communications focus on preserving and improving Lake George, its watershed, and its natural resources.
History
In the late 1990s, residents of Lake George grew increasingly concerned about the encroachment of new commercial businesses threatening the area. Angola Road just south of Baker Road, in particular, saw a significant rise in truck and transportation-related businesses, leading to increased traffic, noise, and light pollution.
To safeguard the lake community, the Lake George Conservancy (LGC) was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2003. Its primary mission is to acquire and preserve land while managing commercial development in ecologically sensitive areas around the lake.
